According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the HVAC industry is projected to grow 14% from 2014 to 2024. This is much higher than the average for most occupations and shows a strong trend of growth in the HVAC field. According to Josh Moore, owner of Gateway Heating & Cooling in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, “Pretty much all of my training was on the job training.” Moore initially had other plans for his career, but instead chose to work for his future father-in-law and learned HVAC installation. “I just sort of fell in love with heating and cooling,” he says. “I moved to a different company where there was a technician and owner that were both really good technicians and I learned a lot from them.”

If you can do a great job, at a great value to your customers, they are much more inclined to recommend you and in turn keep you in mind for any subsequent repairs or updates they need. In the HVAC industry, your best customers could call you every year, every month, or even every week if they operate multiple properties. Staying up to date on everything new in HVAC will put you ahead of your competitors and allow you to book higher profile clients.

With no college degree required and a great starting salary, HVAC has paid dividends for those who stick with it. “My advice for someone looking to get into the industry would be to go for it,” says Moore. “I started in heating and air when I was 18 and it wound up being one of the best decisions I could have made. Trade work, specifically heating and air has been great for me. There is a lot of freedom that you wouldn’t have in other jobs and there is unlimited potential for growth.”
